PHOENIX â The Phoenix Parks and Recreation Board has approved a pilot program to limit hiking during Excessive Heat Warnings.
The United Phoenix Fire Union called for several hiking trails to close when temperatures reach 105 degrees or higher.
The union requested the board restrict access to three trails: Cholla Trail Head, Echo Canyon Trail Head, and the Piestewa Peak Trail Head.
The board says those locations were chosen based on the number of mountain rescues that occur there annually, as well as the difficulty rating of those trails and how that impacts the complexity of the rescues.
