Germany Urges Taiwan To Ease Chip Shortages; Volkswagen Looks To Claim Damages From Suppliers

17Shares Germany is asking Taiwan to persuade its domestic semiconductor manufacturers to help ease chip shortages in the auto sector. According to a report by Reuters, the bottlenecked supply of semiconductors is hampering the former’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. ADVERTISEMENT Chip shortages have affected various automakers around the world, including companies such as Volkswagen, GM Motors, Nissan and many others. This resulted in the shutting down of assembly lines which has slowed down vehicle production from car brands. The report says that German economy minister Peter Altmaier has requested his Taiwanese counterpart Wang Mei-hua to address the issue in talks with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC). In a letter addressed to Wang, Altmaier is asking Taiwan to enable additional capacities and deliveries of semiconductors in the short and medium term.

Apple Partner TSMC has Chosen a West Point Engineer & long-standing Executive to be their new Arizona Plant CEO   On December 23, Patently Apple posted a report titled Apple s Chip Supplier TSMC is now on a hiring Blitz for its US$12 Arizona Plant that will produce 5nm Chips. The report noted that TSMC was aggressively recruiting 600 engineers and executives for its new US plant.   Earlier this week TSMC announced that their Arizona plant will be led by Rick Cassidy, the head of the Corporate Strategy Office. Cassidy will concurrently serve as the CEO and general manager of the subsidiary TSMC Arizona.   Cassidy joined TSMC’s North American subsidiary as deputy general manager of customer management in 1997, and was promoted to general manager and chief executive officer of TSMC’s North American subsidiary in 2005. In 2008, he served as TSMC’s deputy general manager in charge of North American business, and was later promoted to senior deputy General manager.
