Magnesium ions injected directly into compromised bone accelerate bone regeneration

Credit: The authors Bone-regenerating treatments are in high demand due to the ageing population. Increasingly, the orthopaedic biomaterials used to support these treatments are designed to be immunomodulatory , i.e., guide the body s inflammatory response. They do this by encouraging macrophages - a type of white blood cell that surrounds and kills microorganisms - to adopt new roles based on signals and stimuli in their microenvironment. This approach has proved effective for developing new bone and for encouraging existing bone to accept artificial implants. Magnesium is a mineral that not only helps to maintain normal nerve and muscle function, importantly, it also supports a healthy immune system and helps bones to retain their strength. Typically, it is given to orthopaedic patients as an oral supplement.

New medical image fusion method draws on deep learning to improve patient outcomes

Researchers at China s Qingdao University have developed a new multi-modal image fusion method based on supervised deep learning. It enhances image clarity, reduces redundant image features and supports batch processing, improving the accuracy of medical diagnoses.

Etching process enhances the extraction of hydrogen during water electrolysis

Credit: The authors Extracting hydrogen from water through electrolysis offers a promising route for increasing the production of hydrogen, a clean and environmentally friendly fuel. But one major challenge of water electrolysis is the sluggish reaction of oxygen at the anode, known as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). A collaboration between researchers at Hunan University and Shenzhen University in China, has led to a discovery that promises to improve the OER process. In their recent paper, published in the KeAi journal Green Energy & Environment, they report that etching - or, in other words, chemically removing - the oxide overlayers that form on the surface of the metal phosphide electrocatalysts regularly used in electrolysis, can increase OER efficiency.
