Missouri-based Catholic Healthcare International has been sent back to the drawing board by the Genoa Township Board of Trustees following denials related to a proposed chapel and prayer space.
CHI has been seeking to construct a 6,000 square-foot chapel with other accessory uses in honor of St. Padre Pio on 40 acres located on the west side of Chilson Road, south of Crooked Lake Road. The project, which would also include Stations of the Cross, a mural wall, and nature paths for quiet reflection has been loudly opposed by neighbors in the area.
Residents opposed spoke at multiple online planning commission meetings about the project going against the master plan, traffic issues it could cause, and being a general disruption to their rural lifestyle.

A road construction project thatâs expected to have a major impact on traffic in Hamburg Township is expected to start Monday.
A pavement rehabilitation and shoulder paving project is scheduled along a 1.5-mile stretch of Chilson Road from the intersection of Swarthout Road to the Hamburg Township line. Crews will mill the existing surface and then place two new courses of asphalt. The Livingston County Road Commission had to postpone the work for a week due to the recent weather.
Work is expected to begin around 7am Monday on Chilson Road.
Signage and message boards are up to warn motorists. The Road Commission advises that two-way traffic will be maintained through flag control and those traveling in the area should prepare for major delays during the course of construction.

A paving project that had been set to begin on a busy road in Hamburg Township today has been postponed due to low temperatures and possible snow in the forecast this week.
A roughly 1.5-mile stretch of Chilson Road will be resurfaced from the intersection of Swarthout Road, north to the township line â which is just south of the railroad tracks near the Brighton State Recreation area. Itâs approximately 3/8 of a mile north of Bishop Lake Road by the MDNRâs Smokey the Bear sign. The work was originally set to begin Monday morning, but according to the Livingston County Road Commission, that has been delayed due to unseasonably cold weather in the forecast this week, including the possibility of snow on Tuesday.

The construction season is getting going in Hamburg Township and a project that starts next week is expected to result in major delays for motorists.
A pavement rehabilitation and shoulder paving project is scheduled to begin around 7am Monday on Chilson Road, between Swarthout Road and the Hamburg Township line. The work is expected to take about a week and be completed by Saturday, April 24th.

Residents against a proposed chapel and sanctuary space in Genoa Township showed up en masse Monday night, causing the adjournment of the meeting due to pandemic restrictions.
With a space allowing for 18 members of the public in the Genoa Township Hall, and roughly 3 times that number showing up for the meeting, the Board of Trustees was forced to call off their meeting before they could conduct business. Under current health department orders, capacity is limited to 50% of normal room capacity, but social distance space must still be accounted for. Supervisor Bill Rogers said he was shocked when he pulled out the measuring tape and started distancing chairs to find that so few could fit in their space.
