BJP Legislature Party is expected to elect the next Chief Minister of the State
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Sunday tendered his resignation to Governor Jagadish Mukhi prior to a meeting of the BJP Legislature Party, which is expected to elect the next Chief Minister of the State, Raj Bhawan sources said.

In a statement here today, Chief Minister Sonowal said that as an astute public servant and later as a social worker, late Sishuram Pegu contributed immensely for the welfare of all sections of the people of the society. Guwahati, May 9 : The BJP s lead strategist in northeastern states and senior leader Himanta Biswa Sarma, who had played significant role in forming saffron party led governments in three other northeastern states - Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal will take charge as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam on Monday.
Raj Bhavan officials said that Governor Jagdish Mukhi would administer the oath of office to the Chief Minister designate Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday noon at the famous Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati.

BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma will be sworn in as chief minister of Assam at the Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra here on Monday. Governor Jagdish Mukhi invited him to be sworn in after Sarma met him Sunday.
Sarma, who was elected leader of both the BJP and NDA Legislature Party earlier in the day, had called on the Governor at Raj Bhawan and submitted a list of elected legislators owing allegiance to the NDA.
Amid suspense over the next chief minister of Assam, the two main contenders for the post Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma met BJP president J P Nadda and Union Home Minister Amit Shah here on Saturday. After a series of meetings, Sarma told reporters that BJP s Assam legislature party is likely to meet in Guwahati on Sunday and all questions related to the next government will be answered there. Both incumbent Chief Minister Sonowal and Health Minister Sarma were on Friday called to New Delhi by the BJP central leadership, apparently to discuss the leadership issue in Assam.
