In a body-camera video, a DeLand police officer said the victim of a domestic violence incident did it to herself because she was trying to take someone else’s husband.
The officer then steered the October interview in a manner that discouraged the victim from pressing charges, Officer Illya Kryshchenko s superiors said in an Internal Affairs report.
Kryshchenko, 25, who has been an officer with the DeLand Police Department for almost five years, will be serving an 80-hour suspension without pay, DeLand police Lt. Juan Millan said Thursday.
Kryshchenko will also be required to go through remediation training on domestic violence victim sensitivity and dealing properly with domestic violence experts. He will also have to retrain in procedural justice, and fair and impartial policing. He will also have to retrain in dating violence and domestic violence issues.

DeLAND, Fla. – A DeLand police officer fired for making a wrongful arrest in 2017 will be back on the force following an appeal to the city’s decision to fire him after an arbitrator found issues with the investigation into the incident leading to his dismissal.
Officer Johan “Joey” Mulero was fired in December 2018 after a DeLand Police Department internal investigation determined he used “excessive and unreasonable” actions while arresting a man. The charges of resisting arrest were dropped and the man sued the city. The litigation was later settled outside of court.
