Although the public remained passionately divided until the end, the Avon Town Council passed an ordinance Tuesday night allowing the use of off-highway vehicles on public roads in the Wildridge subdivision. The new ordinance will go into effect in 30 days.
The decision came following months of discussion over the topic, including hundreds of public comments on both sides of the debate. The Town Council passed the ordinance on first reading, with a few amendments, earlier this month. Ultimately, the ordinance will legalize a practice that has been a core part of the subdivision’s culture for many of its residents.

Pedestrian safety along U.S. Highway 6 has been a major topic of discussion and contention for the town of Avon for many years. The lack of safe pedestrian crossings along the busy (and fast) corridor has resulted in a number of tragic accidents and presents a major safety concern for property owners.
In the past 10 years, three major car-on-pedestrian crashes have been reported along the 3.5-mile stretch from Avon to EagleVail. This includes two incidents in 2014 and 2015, at Stonebridge Drive and Eagle Road respectively, where pedestrians were injured, and one fatal incident at Stone Creek Drive in 2019.

A plastic shopping bag is surrounded by a circle of liquid somewhere in Athmar Park. Dec. 3, 2019. Has anyone on this Zoom call actually touched one of these bags? asked Councilor Amy Phillips at an Avon Town Council meeting last month. I did, said Councilor Russell Andrade. My first impression was that it definitely felt like a disposable, one-use bag.
Avon banned plastic bags in 2018 from all retailers, with the purpose to protect the public health, safety and welfare from pollution-related to plastic bags. Many Colorado mountain towns have adopted similar laws to keep them out of rivers, trees, landfills and recycling centers the bags jam up machinery.
