destinations. tom costello. good day, we are expecting 2.8 million people to go through tsa check points today. if we just have just a smidge more, we will set an all-time record for travelers through check points. the all-time record was back thanksgiving of 2019. that says, yes, air travel is back. it is completely back to pre-pandemic levels and, in fact, close to exceeding pre-pandemic levels. united airlines has been the story all week. it s said to cancel a quarter to a third of its flights multiple days this week because of operational issues it s had at its major hubs, newark, denver, houston intercontinental as well as a chicago o hare and to a lesser extent we ve seen that also at san francisco. the airline says it s getting very close to getting back to normal operations, at this hour about 5% of the flights for united are canceled as they continue to recover, and the most affected airport continues to be denver. meanwhile, in the northeast and here at washington reagan ai
according to united s ceo scott kirby. already red here on the board here on the cancellations board at reagan national airport. i checked flightaware. 687 cancellations nationwide today. a thousand delays. the day is young. we are about a third of the way to what we saw yesterday. just want to give you a glimpse of how bad things were at the new york area airports last night. there were ground stops at all three airports last night, laguardia they put into place the ground stop, the faa says it was almost grid locked on the taxiways. no place to put planes on the ground. the cancellations, the worst airports today, look like yesterday. newark, laguardia, jfk, boston logan and chicago o hare. although we will see today is really the test, if airlines can recover. the deck of cards came tumbling down starting saturday. that s when united airlines ceo scott kirby says the faa failed
and laguardia, all under groundstops. laguardia, they put the groundstop by the faa because they were worried about gridlock on the ground. there was simply no place to put airplanes but on taxi ways, using every nook and cranny of pavement they can find and the delays and cancellations and the top airports today, laguardia, newark, jfk, boston and chicago o hare. united airlines still top for the delays and cancellations on flight aware for the fifth straight day. united ceo scott kirby late friday night put the blame here on the faa saying there was not enough air traffic controllers to handle all of the flights going in and out of its big hub in newark on saturday, but that spilled over into sunday and things apparently got even worse on monday. so we will see as the day goes on how well the airlines perform here and the faa already warning
last night was especially difficult, especially in new york. three ground stops for all three of the main airports in new york. look at this image from flight radar 24 of what was happening on the ground at laguardia. there was a ground stop there because the faa was simply worried about gridlock, that the taxiways were essentially being turned into parking lots. so you can see that the airplanes are just using every nook and cranny of pavement that they could find. the top cancellations today, newark, laguardia, chicago o hare, jfk and boston. we could see those numbers change, though, jim, as the day goes on. and the faa is warning that storms could swoop into some of these major metro areas and cause more and more ground stops as the day continues. it s still pretty early. it s not that hot out in a lot of places. and as the afternoon continues, the hot air rises, that turns into thunderstorms. so we will see as the day plays out. it could be pretty bad. we could even be seeing it i
