Taiwan Life in Brief – December 2020 - Taiwan Business TOPICS

Taiwan Business TOPICS KMT Protests U.S. Pork The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has begun ramping up its efforts to block U.S. pork containing the feed additive ractopamine from entering Taiwan after the Tsai administration’s announcement in August that it would lift the ban on such imports in 2021. In addition to its efforts to hold a referendum on the issue, the KMT encouraged thousands of its supporters to join an annual labor protest march in November called the Autumn Struggle. The KMT and the Taiwan People’s Party (TPP), the party established by Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je, set up stages on the sidelines of the rally. The KMT estimated that more than 20,000 participants joined its contingent of the protest.

NCC proposing new act to censor Internet: KMT

NCC proposing new act to censor Internet: KMT FREEDOM OF SPEECH: Rather than reflecting on the public outcry over CTi News having its license revoked, the government is doubling down, Alicia Wang said By Sherry Hsiao / Staff reporter The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) yesterday accused the government of attempting to control free speech on the Internet with its plans for an over-the-top media services management act. While the National Communications Commission’s (NCC) draft version of the act would allow over-the-top media service providers to register on what the NCC has described as a “voluntary” basis, under the same act, the agency could also require mandatory registration of providers based on measures such as their number of users, revenue, amount of traffic or market influence, or for some other major public interest, the KMT said.

Digital communications draft bill not internet censorship: NCC 12/14/2020 05:42 PM NCC Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang. CNA file photo Taipei, Dec. 14 (CNA) The drafting of a Digital Communications Act (數位通訊傳播法) is meant to better regulate inappropriate content on online speech platforms and not to censor internet users, the head of Taiwan s National Communications Commission (NCC) said Monday. NCC Chairman Chen Yaw-shyang (陳耀祥) said Taiwan s government would never engage in internet censorship as the internet is a free, open and innovative space. Chen was responding to charges by Taipei City Councilor Lo Chih-chiang (羅智強) of the opposition Kuomintang (KMT) on Sunday that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government was putting internet censorship into law with the act being drafted.

Pro-China TV Station Goes Off Air in Taiwan After Losing Broadcast License

Advertisement Taiwan’s Chung Tien Television (CTiTV) went off air on midnight Friday after its broadcast license was not renewed in a move critics claim is politically motivated. The National Communications Commission (NCC) denied CTiTV its license last month, citing “repeated violations of regulations and the failure of its internal discipline and control mechanisms.” CTi News is known for its China-friendly viewpoints and its opposition to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). It is owned by the Want Want China Times group, which is helmed by Tsai Eng-meng, a Taiwanese businessman openly sympathetic to the Chinese government. Numerous media reports last year alleged properties owned by Want Want received funding and editorial direction from authorities in China. Want Want has denied these claims.
