With New Ipswich Select Board Chair David Lage not seeking reelection for his seat this year, there is a three-way race to fill his slot on the ballot.
During a candidates’ Night on Tuesday, with candidates speaking both in person at the town offices and via Zoom, all three candidates made their pitch for the position. Lou Alvarez, Jason Somero and Charlie Jackman, all three of whom would be newcomers to the board, have put in for the position.
Alvarez, who has served on the Planning Board for the past four years, said he has lived in New Ipswich since 1989, but it was not until his recent retirement that he had the time to become involved in town boards. He said he’s enjoyed his work on the Planning Board, and wants to become further involved in the running of the town.
A team of young footballers have been peddling for pounds to help Worcester Foodbank show hunger the red card this winter. Eleven youngsters from Nunnery Wood Colts Under 10s side raised £275 for the charity after racing past their goal of cycling and scootering 1,000 miles throughout November. The youngsters were Diego Hardie, 9, Danny Willmore, 9, Charlie Jackman, 9, Sam Worley, 9, Reuben Ginever, 10, Harry Meyrick, 10, Ethan Barry, 9, Ben Wilson, 10, Edward Farmer, 9, Jenson Rimell, 9, and William Quinn, 9. Rafa Hardie – Diego’s seven-year-old brother – also joined in with the challenge. The club pledged to donate 25p for every mile their players clocked up during school runs and marathon weekend rides – with the team overcoming punctures, bad weather and fatigue to beat their target by 100 miles.
