Born: March 15, 1917; Died: February 21, 1944
Little is known about Charles Wesley Powellâs connections to Griffin other than he is listed on our World War II Monument in Veterans Memorial Park.
What we do know is he was born March 15, 1917, the son of Charles Wesley Powell and Frances Lula Powell. Subsequently he lived in and around Clay County, Alabama, with his grandmother Mattie A. Powell. The family were farmers.
Powell completed the eighth grade before enlisting in the U.S. Army Oct. 16, 1940, at Fort McPherson, Georgia. He achieved the rank of Tech 5 Specialist while in the Army.
The 1940 Census confirms at that time he was single and stationed at Fort Sherman in the Panama Canal Zone. He died there at Gorgas Hospital from unknown causes on Feb. 21, 1944.
