‘We need to be the voice;’ S.I. faith leaders join to condemn white supremacist flyers

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. After anti-Semitic flyers were discovered in New Dorp earlier this month and in the wake of violence at the U.S. Capitol last week, a candlelight walk and vigil was held on Staten Island Sunday evening denouncing the presence of the white supremacist propaganda.
“The purpose of this walk and candlelight vigil is for Staten Island clergy and community leaders to stand up to racism and white supremacy,” said Rev. Karen Jackson, an inter-religious leader. “We’re responding specifically to the distribution of anti-Semitic flyers here in the New Dorp neighborhood, but also, of course, to the violence we witnessed at the Capitol.”
Advance Woman of Achievement Mary Buttermark, a community volunteer for more than three decades, dies. She would have been 91 next week.

Mrs. Buttermark was a week short of her 91st birthday.
In speaking of the volunteer extraordinaire who was recognized as an Advance Woman of Achievement in the Class of 2012, Anthony C. Ferreri , then SIUH president, said of her community service:
“Her gracious demeanor and welcoming smile serve to ease anxiety for those who desire information, whether it be the location of pre-surgery testing, a patient’s room, or simply directions to a particular service area,” he said in nominating the Great Kills resident as a Woman of Achievement.
