Minister urges farmers in Karnataka to brand their produce

M.A. SRIRAM Agriculture Minister B.C. Patil on Tuesday called upon farmers to process and add value to their products before branding and marketing them.
Speaking after the formal launch of a farmer training programme under the Prime Minister’s Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises at the Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI) here, he said the Agriculture Department, which was hitherto restricting itself to supporting farmers till the harvest of crop, had now come forward to prepare farmers to play a role in the marketing and sale of produce.
KARKALA: Suphala Farmers Producer Company (SFPC) Ltd incubated at Atal Innovation Centre, Nitte on the NMAMIT campus near was formally inaugurated on Saturday. Set up as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to start 10,000 Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs) across India, the newly instituted company is looking to take agriculture beyond the realms of traditional sector and spur a new era of agripreneurship.
P Chandra Shekara, director-general (DG), National Institute of Agricultural Extension Management who inaugurated the company said FPOs are instrumental in transforming the traditional agriculture into agribusiness. “It is the Prime Minister’s vision to set up 10,000 FPOs and this has started working like a catalyst in our agribusiness sector. The FPOs are floating the companies and they need to imbibe some best practices,” he said.
