Uttarakhand glacier burst: Death toll rises to 70, search ops continue

The death toll in the Uttarakhand glacier burst incident has reached 70 after two more bodies were recovered from the debris, according to the state government on Tuesday. According to the information received from the disaster control room yesterday, one dead body was recovered from Srinagar Chauras and one from Kirti Nagar. Of the 206 missings, 70 bodies and 29 human organs have been recovered so far, said the Uttarakhand government. Meanwhile, the rescue and search operation for 134 missing people is underway. Indo-Tibetan Border Police personnel along with National Disaster Response Force and other sister agencies have been conducting search and rescue operations in Chamoli district.

Uttarakhand glacier burst: NDRF reaches 171 metres inside Tapovan tunnel

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel on Monday have reached up to 171 metres inside the Tapovan tunnel. According to NDRF, the excavation work went on from 11:50 pm to 2:15 am last night to dewater the tunnel. Union Home secretary Ajay Bhalla is scheduled to hold a meeting today with Director General of Police (DG) SS Deswal of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), Uttarakhand state officials and other senior officials to discuss further course of action on the artificial lake created after the flood in Chamoli district, according to government sources. The progress of rescue and relief work will also be discussed in the meeting.

Based on recommendations and reports of the joint team on the spot, further course of action will be decided.

Uttarakhand glacial burst: 5 more bodies recovered from Tapovan in Chamoli

A total of 67 bodies have been recovered so far from the debris of dam Tapovan. NDRF personnel rappelled his way down the mountain to install a gauge in the Dhauliganga river in Chamoli. Water level of the river is likely to rise. We are installing a gauge to measure its depth and water level, said Aditya P Singh, Deputy Commandant, NDRF. After a detailed survey of the lake formed in the upper reaches of Chamoli, ITBP and DRDO teams returned to Joshimath. Meanwhile, the State Department Response Force (SDRF) had said on Thursday that 12 of its teams are engaged in the rescue operation for missing people from Reni village to Srinagar and the communication team is also working simultaneously for better communication in the area.
