Into Thin Air: The Strange Vanishing of Dorothy Arnold

Some of the most spectacular and mysterious disappearances are those of people who were of high social standing. Back 1n 1910, Dorothy Arnold was a pretty big deal. The daughter of Francis R. Arnold, a fine goods and perfume importer, she was the heiress to a large fortune, and around Manhattan, New York she was known as a high-profile socialite and aspiring writer who seemed to have the world at her feet. The Arnold family was so affluent that they were listed in the New York City Social Register, and it didn’t seem that Dorothy had much to worry about, despite her writing career not really taking off, and it seemed her future was looking bright whether she achieved her dreams or not. Yet, dark clouds were on the horizon, and one day Dorothy Arnold would take a walk down a busy shopping street and just disappear off the face of the earth, launching a bizarre unsolved mystery that would only get stranger as time went by.

Twitter is turning birds into celebrities and birders against one another

Twitter is turning birds into celebrities and birders against one another By 41 Shares NEW YORK In 2018 it was the Mandarin duck. In October it was the barred owl. Just weeks ago it was the snowy owl. All three avian species catapulted to celebrity status after they landed in Central Park, becoming the subject of news reports from Manhattan to India and attracting gaggles of groupies, snapping away on their smartphones. These rare glimpses of nature in the heart of New York elicit a dose of joy in the best of times. But those feelings of uplift are magnified during the pandemic, when so many people are seeking respite in the outdoors.

Life After the White House: See the Homes Where Former Presidents Lived After Their Time in Office

Credit: Rick Wilking/Getty. Inset: Stock Montage/Getty After two terms in office, George W. Bush returned to his beloved ranch in Crawford, Texas. As he vacationed there often throughout his presidency, the residence was nicknamed the Western White House.  George and Laura Bush completed the three-bedroom Prairie Chapel Ranch in 2001, and gave Architectural Digest a tour in 2014.  The one-story limestone home features an adjacent two-suite guesthouse and a 40-mile network of bike trails, along with a secluded swimming pool and a private 10-acre lake stocked with bass.  “We wanted the house to fit into the landscape,” Mrs. Bush told the outlet. The former first lady collaborated with Texas architect David Heymann to ensure the home is nestled in a grove of live oaks and cedar elms. “It’s slightly motel-ish, but we love that.”
