From Oscar contenders to 'Barb & Star,' Fort Mason Flix's late March slate offers new movies

G. Allen Johnson March 5, 2021Updated: March 11, 2021, 5:23 pm Fort Mason Flix has announced its drive-in movie schedule for the second half of March. Photo: Scott Strazzante, The Chronicle The Oscar nominations are set to be announced March 15, and Fort Mason Flix is ready. Slam-dunk nominees “Minari,”“Promising Young Woman” and “Wolfwalkers” highlight the San Francisco waterfront drive-in’s late March schedule, offering Bay Area drive-in moviegoers a chance to finally watch newly released films on the big screen. “Minari” (sold-out screening March 16), Lee Isaac Chung’s drama about a Korean American family trying to start a farm in Arkansas, and “Wolfwalkers” (March 20), a gorgeously animated fable based in Irish folklore, are co-sponsored by the Roxie Theater, the Mission District art house that has been closed for a year.

Review: Kristen Wiig's new comedy 'Barb & Star' should be full of laughs, but it's a total bust

Mick LaSalle February 11, 2021Updated: February 12, 2021, 7:12 am Kristen Wiig (left) and Annie Mumolo in “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar.” Photo: Cate Cameron, Lionsgate The most fun thing about “Barb & Star Go to Vista Del Mar” is trying to figure out why it’s not fun at all. It stars two comedians, Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo, who are generally very funny, and they have an unmistakable rapport. Indeed, there are lots of moments in the movie that are kind of funny, or almost funny, or seem as if they should be funny. Yet taken together, “Barb & Star” is a total bust.
