earlier i spoke with katey lesneski research and monitoring coordinator for the florida keys national marine sanctuary for the national oceanic and atmospheric administration. katie, thanks so much forjoining us. can you put into contextjust how unusual it is for the ocean to have reached 20.96 degrees celsius? that s 69.7 degrees fahrenheit. hi, sumi, thank you so much for having me on the programme today to share some information about what s going on in our world s oceans. so right now, we are seeing record breaking temperatures when looking at the overall average temperature of the atlantic ocean, and that can be extended to oceans worldwide and that can have cascading effects on all marine ecosystems. so why are we seeing this trend? so we are seeing this trend for a number of reasons, still collecting a lot of data about what s going on. but right now we are in what is called a marine heatwave and these events occur naturally.
so to some extent, those impacts are exceeding the predictions and it is a reminder that again, it s worse than the new normal. this will continue to get worse if we don t reduce carbon emissions and do it quickly. yeah. and last weekend, we were talking about these very strangely hot water temperatures around the florida keys. it is a scary indicator, it seems. and i guess with the heat that we re seeing, we ll see some cascading effects. stronger hurricanes. there is always a discussion about the water and the gulf getting too hot. what is your sense? might we be looking at those kinds of ingredients being in the mix for a really bad end. hurricane season? yeah. those are hot tub temperatures that we re seeing down off the coast southern florida. unlike anything we ve seen before. we call those marine heat waves. the sorts of heat waves that we re used to, they become more
the challenge of china that we have to keep up with. he has put an arbitrary hold on our general flag officers because he doesn t understand our policy. this is going to have a real world impacts. would the relinquishment of responsibility, we have not had an acting commandant in over a century. later this week, general brown will be testifying as he is the next nominated chairman of the joint chiefs of staff. these are going to have huge impacts that will have cascading effects all through the surfaces. they re going to be doing a dual headed jobs. we re facing one of the greatest security threats in europe. speaking of the marine coursing since it is a relinquishment of responsibilities, will this acting person have a limited authority? will that person not be able to fully exercise the powers of the marine corps because the person is not a comment on of

charges like this often have cascading effects and as you mentioned, the president s facing at least three other potential criminal investigations into his conduct right now. whichever way these charges go and hopefully we ll be privy to all of them in the next 15 minutes or so, how might this strengthen or weaken the former president s hand in those other key cases? i think that s a great question on the politics side of things. not on the legal side of things. you know, i don t think any of these district attorneys or the special counsel are interacting saying you go first, no, you go first, or i m ready to go. that s not how it works behind the scenes. but it is the case that this went first and it may be the thinnest gruel of them all in
