Older adults in Polk County can make a contribution to science while possibly reducing their risk of developing dementia.
The University of South Florida is seeking local participants in a study to measure the effects of “brain games” on delaying mental decline. The university recently received a $44.4 million federal grant to continue its Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training (PACT) study.

Preliminary data from clinical trials indicate that a particular type of computerized training improves mental ability, USF officials said in announcing the new study. A recent study found decreases of nearly 50% for some in the risk of developing dementia after engaging in rigorous computer games, said Aryn Bush, a professor in USF’s School of Aging Studies.
