Pursuit of grants stopped; projects dead in the water  - Mount Desert Islander

Pursuit of grants stopped; projects dead in the water  SOUTHWEST HARBOR Residents will not get the chance to vote on Warrant Article 43 at the annual Town Meeting on June 5.   The article asked if voters want to pursue grant funding for two projects in town, but the Board of Selectmen decided on Tuesday to amend the annual Town Meeting warrant to exclude it.   Expansion and development of the Manset Dock was one of the projects and developing a parcel of property adjacent to Chris’s Pond that would include low–income housing was the second. Those involved with coordinating the projects were pursuing grant money from the state’s Land and Water Conservation Fund with an application deadline of the end of this month, as well as a federal Small Harbor Improvement Program (SHIP) grant.

MDI trail system nominated for historic places registry

MDI trail system nominated for historic places registry  SOUTHWEST HARBOR Worried about possible future constraints on private and public property, selectmen voted Tuesday to submit a letter to the Maine Historic Preservation Commission outlining several concerns regarding a nomination of the Mount Desert Island Hiking Trail System to the National Register of Historic Places.   Notices regarding this nomination were previously sent a year ago, on April 17, 2020, to each town on Mount Desert Island regarding the nomination. That was a month after nearly all public events were shut down due to COVID-19. Selectmen and the Bar Harbor Town Council were trying to figure out how to continue meeting via Zoom, among other pressing town business, and may not have had time to review these notices.

Southwest Harbor navigates staff changes - Mount Desert Islander

Southwest Harbor navigates staff changes SOUTHWEST HARBOR  There have been a lot of changes at the Southwest Harbor Town Office in the last couple of months that are expected to continue for the foreseeable future.  Currently, town officials are in the process of figuring out how to conduct a search for a permanent town manager and a police chief. Since the removal of Town Manager Justin VanDongen at the Jan. 26 Board of Selectmen’s meeting, Dana Reed has agreed to be the interim town manager until a permanent replacement is hired.  During their meeting Tuesday night, members of the Board of Selectmen signed a findings of fact statement that was drawn up by the town’s attorney regarding VanDongen’s dismissal. It states the board decided to remove the town manager for “convenience. As described in the contract, convenience means ‘without cause.’”
