Community news round-up: Updates from Bellingham, Slaley, Prudhoe and more

By Herbie Newall Humshaugh came together last Wednesday to celebrate the life of Jodi Walsham. Those unable to attend St Peter’s due to Covid restrictions joined online to remember a much-loved young woman who now rests forever in the heart of our village. A wonderful tribute bravely given by Jayne recalled a talented and caring daughter who achieved so much and touched so many in her short life. Jodi’s love of travel took her round the world, and wherever she went her free and lively spirit made her a ray of sunshine and a friend to many. Jayne’s words were echoed in a moving eulogy by John McCollum, who reflected how Jodi’s theatrical talents, first seen at school and theatre group, led her to study at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, before going on to set up a theatre company for young Liverpudlians. Also, how Jodi’s love of animals and for those less fortunate led to wonderful acts of kindness such as caring for abandoned cats in Vietnam and taking

Matfen Jean Conteh Another quiet week in Matfen village as the temperatures plummeted and the weather conspired with the lockdown to keep people indoors. I’m planning to put together the next Matfen Community Newsletter soon, the first one of 2021, so get in touch via jeanconteh@waitrose.com if you have anything you’d like to contribute. It will appear every two months this year. It’s meant to be a round-up of what’s been happening in the community, as well as plans and ideas for the future. It’s a space for anyone in the community to publicise events, ideas and activities, or to share positive thoughts and reflections about life in Matfen over the years. Since it started last year, it has been distributed through Rev Rachel’s email list. If you haven’t received it so far and would like to do so, get in touch on the email above and I’ll ad you to the list.

Tynedale community round-up (part two)

Newbrough Rob Tindall Some really good news! Mary Pedley the chair of governors at Newbrough School appealed for any old laptops which might have to lend, or donate to support those pupils learning at home who do not have access to such equipment. The school knew of one multi-child home where the only access was through a single mobile phone. The appeal was seen by local author Louise Ross who immediately responded by donating seven brand new laptops. The school is astounded and extremely grateful for Louise’s very generous donation. Newbrough now has sufficient laptops for its needs, but suggests that anyone reading this who has a surplus laptop contacts their local school to see if they could use it.
