Memorial Day was established as a national holiday to honor the ultimate sacrifice that the men and women who wore our country’s uniform made to ensure our freedom.
I’ve been rereading John “Soup” Campbell’s book, “They Were Ours, Gloucester County’s Loss in Vietnam,” which pays tribute to the 44 county men who died serving our country during the Vietnam War. Scottish National Gallery, Edinburgh The Scottish National Gallery on The Mound has moved seven of its Post-Impressionist paintings to a display on the ground floor. Among them are Monet’s Haystacks, Van Gogh’s Olive Trees and Vision Of The Sermon by Gaugin. They’ll be exhibited alongside other SNG faves such as Landseer’s Monarch Of The Glen and Raeburn’s Skating Minister. Visitor numbers are limited, social distancing rules apply, there’s a timed ticketing system and booking must be made online.

Anyone getting excited about summer days after lockdown may warm to this daydreamy scene. Renoir was one of the founders of the impressionist movement in the early 1870s â painting in the moment, in the open, to capture fleeting light. Here, a decade on, heâs still spontaneous and sensual. But the impressionist belief in depicting reality is melting. Those toothy rocks snarling out of the sea seem like fantastic visions. The green and gold water is a warm syrupy concoction, rippling with nostalgia. Renoir is sailing away from the real to the surreal.
