1,251 players from 35 states competed in Round Rock, Texas near Austin to determine the nation’s top middle school chess players ROUND ROCK, TEXAS: The 501(c)3 US Chess Federation’s 2023 National Middle School (K-8) Championship took place from April 21-April 23, 2023 at the Kalahari Resort in Round Rock, Texas. A total of 1,251 players from 35 states competed.

The 2023 National High School (K-12) Championship (NHS) took place from March 31-April 2 at the Washington Hilton in Washington, D.C. A record-setting 1,745 players from 38 states attended topping the previous record of 1,713 players set at our 2019 event; the number could have been higher but the number had to be capped due to space concerns. The first NHS was held in 1969.
The US Chess Federation (US Chess) and the US Chess Trust, both independent 501(c)(3) organizations, are pleased to announce six recipients of the 2023 Scholar-Chessplayer Awards. This includes the winners of a category introduced in 2022, Scholastic Chess Ambassador, which permits acknowledgement of lower-rated yet deserving chess scholars.
