Regarding Noozhawk’s March 3 article, “Green Bicycle Lanes Coming to State Street in Downtown Santa Barbara,” I live downtown and I’m appalled by the garish bright green painted sections being developed for bike traffic down the middle of State Street. Ugly!!! That’s the first problem; it’s not at all in keeping with the aesthetics of the area.
Second, let’s not encourage the rude bikers (not all) to go flying through that area even faster.
A third problem is that I keep reading that the city wants pedestrians to use the sidewalks. Have you tried that?! Even when it’s not very busy down there? We’re still in the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s impossible to social distance on the sidewalk in many places. Restaurants have tables there, wait staff is crossing through to the street, and many people on the sidewalk are not wearing masks.
