bring the case. but that was contradicted by the experienced career lawyers in the civil rights division of the justice department who said they could prosecute and win the case. no that? in part because in 1998, the justice department won a case against an nypd officer who killed a man by putting him in a chokehold. and in that case, ari, they didn t have cell phone video. and this video we see mr. garner saying 12 times, i can t breathe. right. that s what i want to play. i m going to tell my folks because we have a live action situation watching the house. i m telling my control room to pull up, we have some of that video, which i think we re going to pull up in a moment. and that puts together what you just said. i want folks the understand this, because it s directly relevant to what s happening on the house floor and the question of civil rights and justice and equality in america and whether the justice department is even qualified to deal with this. i ve talked to a lot of
folks there. those career lawyers at the justice department, they ve got twisted into a vice by barr in connection with the census. that was unconscionable. and at the labor department, there are people who are trying to do great work. but folks at the top, the way they do it is they take power away from them. and basically businesses are they have cart blanche to write the rules. that s not how it s supposed to be. tom perez is the dnc chairman. but for the purposes of this conversation, he is a former labor secretary under president obama. coming up, new nbc news wall street journal polling shows srmt elizabeth warren is gaining popularity with democratic voters. we are going to look at what the numbers mean for the democratic nomination. you are watching msnbc. e watchic who used expedia to book the vacation rental that led to the ride
you shouldn t be counted. and that s what this agenda is about and also naked partisan power. the republicans want to make their agenda and platform more appealing to the entire country, instead they re just doubling down on a demographic decision that is making them irrelevant from the future. that s their choice. jeremy bash, what all of this makes perfect sense in donald trump s world and donald trump s mind, but what explains the attorney general william barr siding with the president s maniacal obsession with the dehumanizing of people in this country, a count that would undercount 6.5 million americans at the cost of those 11 doj career lawyers who said, i m not doing this? barr very sadly is participating in trump s attack on the rule of law. and he s decided to take the president s side and be his personal counsel and support his political agenda as opposed to standing up for the law of the land. of course, under our system when the supreme court rules, it is
that direction as yet, but it is within the democrats power to launch impeachment proceedings against a cabinet official like alex acosta if that s what they wanted to do. we are watching this case. we are watching this question whether labor secretary alex acosta is going to resign or get fired for what he did to epstein s victims. there is also a ton of other legal drama that unfolded over the course of the day. we re going to get to some of this news over the course of this hour. in the case where the trump administration is trying to change the census and they keep getting stopped by the courts in their efforts to do so, tonight there was a very dramatic move by a federal judge in new york city who blocked efforts by the justice department to swap out the whole legal team that s been working on that census case. there had been speculation that the career justice department lawyers working on the census case either wanted out because they didn t feel like they could responsibly k
case. joining us from washington to help make sense of this is a reporter for the washington post, eugene scott. great to see you this morning appreciate you getting up. given the new developments, it looks like the president is going to have to take no on the answer to the census, or will he, do you think? well, for now, he certainly does. i know there was some frustration among career lawyers at the department with how the case was being handled which is part of the reason why some wanted to see some changes and did not want to work on the case. but the judge just didn t feel like sufficient evidence had been provided as to why decisions needed to be made related to changes this closely to their next meeting. and so, this whole process so far is not going the way that the president would have hoped. he s blaming judges, but the reality so far is that his administration doesn t appear to provide sufficient evidence for his question originally for changes that need to be made. or j
