Reflections: More April events from the past
By Evelyn Long - Contributing Columnist
I lifted the top page on past April stories and the headline said “April Ice Storm Topples Telephone Poles!” It wasn’t ice I woke up to yesterday morning but snow! In April.
This ice story happened in April, 1957, when ice covered wires and wind toppled 17 poles of the Ohio Central Telephone Corporation on the east side of Route 42 just south of Mount Gilead. The story notes nearly 200 poles belonging to the Ohio Central Telephone Corp and Ohio Bell Telephone Co in the area were broken or uprooted by the storm.
Cardington-Lincoln purchases 2 buses
By Evelyn Long - For The Sentinel
CARDINGTON Members of the Cardington-Lincoln Board of Education, considered many topics over the course of a three- hour meeting held Monday, April 12.
• Approved was the purchase of two new buses, totaling nine new buses in the past six years. This equals the replacement of new route buses as there are eight regular daily routes. One of the new buses will carry handicapped students as it has a lift with camera (cost $58,694) and the other is a stock bus with camera system and ten year warranty (cost $98,694).
These 72 passenger buses were purchased with federal stimulus funds, noted district treasurer Jon Mason. Mason said the district finance overall balance was holding strong. Income from real estate taxes was a bit higher, he said.
Reflections: Aprils of the past
By Evelyn Long - Contributing Columnist
Reading through some of the old newspapers I have in my possession I want to share some of the more interesting stories. For instance, in the April 18, 1901 edition of the Morrow County Independent, there is a front page story head lined “Two Fires in One Day.”
The first was from a small blaze in the roof of the Sipe building on east Main street. Please note, the spelling in those days- the only word capitalized was the name of the street, “Main,” while east and street were not.
The first alarm was from a small blaze in the roof of the Sipe building caused by a spark from a chimney. However, the second fire was “just at noon, and called people to a blaze that was more disastrous.” The barn on the old school house lot was completely destroyed and a horse, oil wagon, two sets of harness and seven chickens were burned.
