Remembering the Amazing Shreveport Artist Ron Rice
Just as a bit of clarification before we get in to the story of this amazing local artist, I (Rueben Wright) had only just recently heard of Ron Rice. My mother is an avid garage and estate sale patron, and from time-to-time she finds something for me like old records or weird art. Last year, I was gifted one-such item at Christmas. It was a bordered drawing of an oafish-looking man shooting the screen out of his television (seen above), and I immediately loved it.
After having it around my home for a short while, I noticed that was a cartoon drawn by Ron Rice that may have been published in the Shreveport Journal, a famous publication in Shreveport from the 1800 s all the way until 1991. That s when I began learning all I could about Rice.

Film Prize Junior’s record-breaking 2021 festival came to a close last night during a live broadcasted Awards Ceremony where the winning films were announced and over $10,000 in scholarships and media grants were awarded.
The festival, presented by the Louisiana Film Entertainment Association (LFEA) and the Prize Foundation, featured a record-breaking 68 films from 37 schools across the state of Louisiana and saw over 3,000 votes come in from 49 states across the country as well as from England, Ontario Canada, and Puerto Rico over three times the number of votes from last year’s festival.
“I’m not sure we were fully prepared for the overwhelming response to Film Prize Junior 2021,” said Gregory Kallenberg, executive director of the Prize Foundation and Film Prize Junior. “These incredibly talented young filmmakers created some amazing films, and then they brought a massive crowd to the festival. We were blown away!”

I am not Marcus Antonius. I do not come to bury Shreveport but to praise her.
I have moved to Shreveport four different times. My family lived here from 1955 to 1957, in Shreve Island. The family moved back in the summer of 1967, just before my junior year in high school. I was one of the students present for the first day of Captain Shreve High School.
As I got ready to graduate from law school, I had an offer from Vinson & Elkins, a Houston-based large firm. It then had over 200 lawyers. It now has over 650. I was headed for bright lights and big city.
Professional basketball is back in Shreveport as the Shreveport Mavericks have released their 2021 schedule.
The team, now a member of The Basketball League, held its Media Day Monday, allowing local media its first opportunity to meet the new-look Mavericks.
As a member of the ABA, the franchise never lost a game in Shreveport on their way to back-to-back national championships. Long-time head coach Steve Tucker still expects his team to compete for a championship, but warns there may be a few more bumps in the road this time around, The Mavericks of old were a battle-tested, championship team when we were in Shreveport. This is a very young team. We ve got a lot of rookies on this team, more than half our roster is rookies. I m not comfortable with that but we are very, very talented. I encourage the fans to be patient with us because I think we will get there and we ll be the Mavericks of old somewhere down the line.
