latest developments live from quantico this morning, shannon, what do we know right now? reporter: we are still monitoring those developments as they unfold. we are being told that an official briefing for the media will happen at about 7:00 a.m., but let s go over exactly some of the details as we know them now. you mentioned them, christine, three people dead, all of them believed to be marines. the shooter believed to be male, the first victim believed to be male as well. and the second victim, gender unclear. now, let s walk through the series of events as we understand them. about 11:00 last night, there was a dispatch over the marines, the officer s candidate school. at that point an announcement went out over the marine base s public announcement system telling everyone on base to stay inside and to lock their doors and stay inside. that lockdown that you mentioned. shortly after that, officials, police officials began to
training academy, and it s located about 7 37 miles south of washington. elizabeth prann with the very latest. reporter: we know those three active duty marines, in fact, they were employees, permanent staff here at the officers candidate school are dead this morning, but what we don t know from police is exactly why or any motive as to why this happened. it could be up to 24 hours before we even know the identities of those involved. families need to be notified, next of kin, and they won t speculate, as i said, on any motive. no one else was injured in this shooting. it was not a random attack, it was a, quote, isolated incident. the reports of the shooting came in right around 10:30 last night. it all happened at taylor hall, barracks here on the base. the campus was immediately put on lockdown. base police discovered one of the victims, and they pulled back to assess the situation, to really gauge what was happening at the time, and then they found two other bodies. all in all
one person was shot dead there. this happened around 11:00 last night. the gunman then went over to a barack where he barricaded himself inside. military police were spotted. they also called in reenforcements from local police. they went in with a special reaction team. and when they went in, were told they found the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound as well as a second victim. no motive yet for this we re told that the gunman is believed to be a staff member at the officer candidate school. candidate school. he was an active-duty marine. the two victims were also active duty marines and the base was put on lockdown at the time of the shooting. the lockdown has been lifted. the identification of the gunman and two victims have not been released at this point. the military the marines here at quantico are saying this is an isolated incident.
what ultimately appears to be a double murder/suicide. this is all under investigation. the marines included a sergeant and two corporals who are actually training in the officers candidate school there. and they did locate a handgun which appeared not to be military issue but a personal weapon. the identities of these three marines will not be released until 24 hours after all the families are notified which is the military custom rule if you will. so right now, the investigation is underway and everybody is pretty much guessing exactly how this went down. once they talk to other witnesses who know the three, and gather up the forensics, they ll need to come one a formal conclusion and all that could take weeks. nbc s chief correspondent, jim miklaszewski. thanks. i want to bring in dr. zimmer. he is an expert on service members. he wrote the book military
