Cancellation
No insurance policy covers your costs if you unilaterally decide to cancel your holiday; this remains the case even if you believe there is very reasonable cause for you to do so.
However, Covid-19 has brought a whole new dimension to the risks of having to cancel or change your holiday. And we don’t yet know which scenarios are likely to be a risk in future. There are obvious ones, such as contracting the disease prior to departure (or testing positive) and a requirement to self isolate because of exposure to someone who has the disease. Some policies do now cover this – see table – though all are subject to strict definitions.

Travel insurance is important at any time, but during the coronavirus pandemic it s more of a necessity than ever. Here s what you need to know.
1. I HAVE A HOLIDAY BOOKED, WHAT ARE MY CHANCES OF GETTING AWAY FROM THE UK?
If your holiday is imminent, the chances are zero. Not only does the current national UK lockdown, announced for England on 4 January 2021, mean that non-essential travel is forbidden, but the new variants of Covid-19 have seen many countries close their borders to UK travellers. Since Monday 18 January 2021 all travel corridors have been closed, meaning everyone arriving into the UK, no matter where they have arrived from, has to self-isolate for 10 days, or five days if they then pay to take a Covid test which reveals a negative result. Find out more information about quarantine for UK travellers and which countries are in the red list of destinations.

I expect to be vaccinated against Covid-19 by the end of February. As a widow living alone, I have had a very solitary existence for many months and would like to take a holiday once the shackles of Covid restrictions come off. I have not seen my in-laws, who live in Egypt, for over a year and I am keen to make the journey.
The fly in the ointment is travel insurance. I have an annual worldwide travel insurance policy as part of my Lloyds Bank account, arranged through Axa Insurance. I approached Axa this week and asked whether pandemic cover would be reinstated once a customer had been vaccinated. It replied that its underwriters were retaining the exclusion. What possible justification can there be for this?
