Porritt Classic: Jacko Gill equals his personal best to defeat Tom Walsh again in shot put

The national track and field championships in Hastings on March 5-7 will be another event where they clash before considering the prospect of going overseas ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in July, Covid-19 permitting, and Gill is in career-best form while Walsh, a former world champion and medallist at the last Olympics (bronze) and Commonwealth Games (gold), is stuck in a rut. Gill, 26, is currently riding the crest of a wave with three straight victories over Walsh and a career-best throw of 21.52m at the International Track Meet in Christchurch last weekend. But he will be wary of the constant threat of three-time world champion Walsh, who has improved in distance in each of his outings this season. The 28-year-old started with 20.14m at the Night of 5s meet in

Palmerston North athletes to the fore at Cooks Classic

There has now been 69 sub-four-minute miles completed on the track. Benjamin Wall did not go with the early pace, but led the chasing bunch home, finishing very strongly for fifth place in 4m 3.95s. This was a personal best and a good indication he could be the first Palmerston North athlete. Noah Macdermid also achieved a big personal best, coming home 11th in 4m 10.22s. The meeting got off to a good start for Palmerston North, with Chayille Collette running a personal best of 12.39s in winning the women’s 100 metres. Later in the evening she ran another personal best of 25.39s, finishing second in the 200m.
