Playoff previews abound in each division as Atlanta follows up its decisive win in DC with a home victory over previously #1 New York to keep itself first in the Atlantic; Chicago beat Minnesota on the road, giving the Union an inside edge at hosting a playoff game; and Dallas beat San Diego who in turn beat Austin, sending the West pecking order into chaos. Oh, and the Canada Cup commenced with underdog Ottawa defeating both Toronto and Montreal. There’s never a dull week in the AUDL, especially as the playoff picture comes into focus.

For the first time since August 2019, live semi-pro ultimate is coming to a stadium (or livestream) near you. After a long offseason featuring a divisional realignment, an expansion franchise and plenty of roster moves, fans are excited to see how the 2021 season will play out and which four teams will take the field on September 10-11 for Championship Weekend in Washington D.C.
Freyberg seamers Brad Fulton and Ali Akhter took four and three wickets, respectively, giving them an 80-run lead. Freyberg then scored 193-8 in their second dig and pushed for quick runs, giving them a lead of 273. Scott Mitchell came close to a century, but was out for 91, caught down the ground. Mitchell had an opening stand of 64 with opener Charles Parker, who scored 33. Old Boys spinners Trent McGrath and Regan Fleming put the brakes on as McGrath took four 4-57 and Fleming 3-65. Old Boys then had 41 overs to bat and hung on to be 96-8 at stumps. Freyberg looked like they were closing in at 55-5 and 83-7, but Old Boys did enough to survive until the end of play. McGrath top scored with 19.
There is one more week of the twenty20 competition remaining.
CRICKET: Marist batsman Craig Lawrence put in the Manawatū club performance of the weekend, smashing a century in their 57-run win over Old Boys in the twenty20 competition. Lawrence raced to 100 not out from 56 balls, hitting eight fours and five sixes as Marist piled on 194-4 batting first at Ongley Park in Sunday. The win put Marist into fourth place with one round of matches remaining this weekend, but they are out of the running. There is one round at 12pm on Saturday, with the final at 3.30pm. Unbeaten United still lead the competition and have already qualified for the final. Freyberg are second and Palmerston North Boys High School are third, and they play each other in the final round in a virtual semifinal.
