Indonesian Navy rules out human error, overloading as factors in submarine sinking

The Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia – Angkatan Laut: TNI-AL) has ruled out human error, and refuted suggestions that its doomed Cakra (Type 209/1300)-class diesel submarine (SSK) was carrying more personnel than the boat was designed for at the time of its disappearance.

(402), was first reported as missing on 21 April while it was preparing for a training mission in the Bali Sea, and was discovered sunk at a depth of about 830 m four days later. All personnel onboard have been declared by the TNI-AL as dead.

Fifty-three people are feared dead after an Indonesian submarine sank off the coast of the island of Bali, Indonesian Navy officials said Saturday.
Officials made the call after items from inside the submarine were found in the ocean, indicating the vessel, KRI Nanggala 402, had cracked and sunk, leaving no hope of finding survivors alive.
Indonesia’s President Joko Widodo has pledged recovery and salvage efforts will continue for 53 Indonesian submariners now believed lost on board the
KRI Nanggala-402, last heard from on Wednesday, 21 April 2021, while performing practice exercises in the water north of the Island of Bali.
The Head of Staff for the
Indonesian Navy, Admiral Yudo Margono, told
Kompas.com that a breach in the hull of
KRI Nanggala-402 would have resulted from the ship sinking to 850 meters below sea level, a depth far in excess of the vessel maximum service depth of 250-500 meters.
“Through the discovery of equipment from the scene, it appears a hull breach occurred. This would be the certain result of sinking past the 700-800-meter mark,’ said Amiral Yudo.
