AUBURN, ALA. – Three-seed Florida State (34-23) beat two-seed UCLA (38-23) Friday 5-3 to record the first win of the 2022 NCAA Baseball Tournament. FSU advances to the winner’s bracket and will play either Auburn or SE Louisiana Saturday at 7:00 p.m. ET.
Parker Messick (7-5) allowed a pair of runs with four strikeouts in 5.0 innings for his first win away from Dick Howser Stadium this season. Wyatt Crowell, Jonah Scolaro and Davis Hare combined for four innings out of the bullpen, with the only run scoring on a wild pitch. Hare recorded five outs for his team-high fourth save of the season.
The Seminoles took an early lead against UCLA’s Max Rajcic (8-5). With two outs in the first, Jaime Ferrer doubled and scored on James Tibbs’ RBI single, the first at-bat in the NCAA Tournament for both true freshmen.

CHARLOTTE – First-team All-ACC pitcher Parker Messick is one of three Seminoles named to the All-ACC teams, the league announced on Packer & Durham Monday morning.
Bryce Hubbart is a second team pitcher, while outfielder Jaime Ferrer was named to the All-Freshman team.
Messick, from Plant City, Florida, was a four-time ACC Pitcher of the Week, finishing the year with a 6-4 record and 3.05 ERA, with 136 strikeouts and 15 walks in 88.2 innings pitched. Messick ranks second in the country in strikeouts, fifth in strikeouts per nine innings, eighth in strikeout-to-walk ratio and 13th in WHIP. He was the best in the ACC in all four categories.
Messick had a stretch of 30.0 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run at Dick Howser Stadium, a run that included games against No. 7 TCU, No. 9 Louisville and No. 16 Notre Dame. He was the starting pitcher for three of FSU’s four shutout wins – against TCU, Louisville and Samford.

CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina (33-19) clinched the season-ending series against Florida State (32-21) Friday night, winning 10-4 in front of 2,777 fans at Boshamer Stadium.
Parker Messick (6-4) was tagged with the loss, allowing three earned runs (four total) over 6.0 innings pitched. He struck out four batters and now ranks 13th in FSU single-season history with 136 for the year.
Isaiah Perry earned the start in left field and had two singles, including one on the second pitch of the game. After Jaime Ferrer singled, Brett Roberts plated both runners with a two-run double against Brandon Schaeffer (6-2).
Schaeffer posted five shutout innings before Brock Mathis’ sixth home run of the season to start the seventh.
