Diamondbacks 2021 Non-Roster Invitees, Part 4: Catchers and the rest

Jose Herrera
Herrera has been around the Diamondbacks organization for a long time, having been signed out of Venezuela in 2013. He was regarded at that point as the top catcher in the international market, getting a seven-figure signing bonus, Normally, spending seven years without ever getting above High-A would not get you a spring invite. But Herrera only just turned 24 a couple of weeks ago, and the last time he played, for Visalia in 2019, he was below league average age. There is some baggage here, with a 50-game suspension handed down in April 2018, after Herrera tested positive for stimulants. I trust the relevant lessons have been learned.

MLB Trade Rumors
Curt Casali’s offseason negotiations with the
Giants were interrupted by a surgery, as Casali underwent a hamate bone procedure on his left hand in December. The catcher told MLB.com’s Maria Guardado and other reporters that he suffered the injury while playing for the Reds in the postseason and initially planned to just rehab the issue before opting for surgery. There was already a verbal agreement in place between Casali and the Giants prior to his surgery, and once the Giants were satisfied about Casali’s health, the two sides officially finalized a one-year, $1.5MM deal in early January.

The 2021 Mets are one of the most fascinatingly constructed teams in recent memory, due to their abundance of offensive prowess and their absolute lack of outfield defense. Because of not wanting to shell out big bucks to either George Springer or, as of yet, Jackie Bradley Jr, the Mets are likely going to be relying on an everyday outfield of Dominic Smith in left, Brandon Nimmo in center, and Michael Conforto in right. This is not ideal, though offensively it would be one of the strongest outfields in baseball.
