general william barr would make the right decision when asked about the molar investigation s final report. this conversation came on the importance of the rule of law. this is just over an hour. [applause] one of the issues we talked about was fake news. i regret to say i m not the longest-serving deputy attorney general. in my home state of maryland, there was a u.s. attorney that served for 19 years and i served for only 12. so i am far from achieving that distinction. but my career in the department does go back so far that i remember when bill parr was attorney general of the united states. [laughter] mr. rosenstein: he was actually deputy attorney general when i began my job and then ascended to the attorney general position thereafter and we are very grateful, very fortunate to have him back. i think that is yet another example of a superb appointment that president trump has made which i believe does demonstrate a commitment to the rule of law. and i m grateful for
he wants again held over by president trump. rod rosenstein s long ten ured by u.s. attorney was marked by murders and other violent offenses. attributed both to enforcement and prosecution but also to robust collaboration between prosecutors, police, and the community, focused on crime prevention. equally imposive, he preserved public trust in the public system by going after corrupt police officers, even elected officials as doggedly as he pursued violent repeat offenders and large-scale drug dealers. in 2017 he was appointed by president trump to be the 37th deputy attorney general of the united states. where his responsibilities include formulating and implementing departmental policies and programs and providing overall supervision to all of the organizational units of the department of justice. most famously, of course, appointed robert mueller as special prosecutor to ensure an independent and impartial investigation a and was the d.o.j. he pledged to, quote, work
given an opportunity to help try to change the direction of the country. i believe that s not just an opportunity but an obligation and we are focused and committed to focus on the economy as well as getting people back to work to strengthen the middle class. joining in what my colleagues have said there is a lot of work up there to be done. i m optimistic. we have the rules of the senate that allows us to do it. it gives us follow those rules. i m also lost the sick there are a lot of things beyond the keystone pipeline that there is tremendous agreement on if we can just get to that work and i believe the new majority leader is absolutely committed to see that we get this work done. lots of legislation like senator barrasso just said for more american energy and things that produce good jobs to take care of families in ways that families would like to be able to take care of themselves and frankly the president is going to engage one way or another. the last four years no
out of. if you could perhaps speak to that issue, protecting and hardening it to our terrorism s. thank you for the question, chairman smith. i will defer to my colleagues specifically in relation to power africa and those engagements. i can tell you the recognition that we encounter from energy companies and energy agencies, ministries in our international engagements to an ever-increasing degree recognize the importance of protecting infrastructure. one of the things the department of energy does is to enter into cooperative engagements with key international partners. we do this at their expense, at the expense of the host country to help them identify older abilities, vulnerabilities. plan their systems so there is resilience to in the threats, at all hazards approach whether one is talking about severe weather, cyber attack or physical attack. we have found that this is an area where the united states is in a position to add tremendous amount of value from our experi
