A sign placed in front of Brownstone Intermediate School in Portland garnering a lot of attention. The sign was to protest the requirement of students wearing masks in school. But it was the images of Portland’s superintendent and the chairwoman of the board of education that caused the controversy. “They were targeted by having swastikas on their foreheads and a mustache like Adolf Hitler had,” said Susan Bransfield, Portland s First Selectwoman.

The images likened Superintendent Charles Britton and Board of Education Chairwoman Sharon Peters to Adolf Hitler above caricatures of masked children. The Portland Board of Education released a statement calling the images anti-Semitic and abhorrent. The board defended its decision to require masks to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff, according to WTNH News-8. Other leaders including Attorney General William Tong and state legislators also condemned the anti-Semitic images.

A group gathered Sunday outside the school on Main Street to apparently protest the mask policy for students. Shortly before 11:30 a.m., an individual stood alone outside the school with two signs. One read “unmask our kids,” and the other showed antisemitic imagery.
