On a gray winter day about a dozen years ago, when Alex Nickley and his twin brother Ben were home from college, they took a walk around their neighborhood in Northeast Ohio.  Ben had recently taken a course in ornithology, which is the study of birds, and pointed out the different species he spotted among the branches of the bare trees.

Article content It appears that one of our most popular birds in Renfrew County will be arriving in our area on schedule. This, of course, is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird. This year, I thought that these birds might arrive early due to the large numbers reported south of the border. However, the cool and breezy weather this past two weeks delayed their arrival. In early April, these birds usually arrive in the southern states from their winter home. By the end of April to early May, they normally will have arrived in Renfrew County. The earliest known record for this bird’s arrival in our area is April 16. Last year, the birds were late, only arriving during the first and second weeks of May.
