What i would like to do is add to an ongoing conversation here about what i would like to call the two flags of feminism. And in its 60s and 70s, two different aims. One was to hold up the flag of gender equality. Is involved first of all the right to go to work. It is easy to remember it is easy to forget what we didnt have in 1960. Women did not stay at work and women were largely absent in the professions. Many women, in many states couldnt hold take out a loan from a bank in their own name. In my university, ucberkeley at that point, three , full professors, 8 associate professors, going to the male faculty club and all the photographs, very august looking men, if you blow the horn you couldnt be in the cow band for example in 1960. So Everybody Knows who you are. And the American Legion post. So whether it was books or dvds or cds or even ipods, batteries, some of the things that theyd let us know that they needed, and we collected a few boxes and sent them to the troops. Each year its gotten bigger and bigger and bigger, and i think last year we sent over 300 boxes to the troops, and we collected a lot of money which, of course, if you come to the event and you havent brought a set of batteries, you dont need to feel bad because we have, like, 25 bags, 50 bags, 100 bags, 40,000 bags if you want to bring that. And well fill them full of things that they need. So thats on november 8th starting at 6 00, and youll see here who our speakers are, and they are equally spectacular. Great day to be in texas and today i have the honor and pleasure to be at the texas book festival serving as a moderator, and im pleased to be here with rachel l. Swams. I will tell you a few things about rachel because you came here to hear her and not me and our time is limited. She has worked for the New York Times since 1995. Reporting on domestic policy, national politics, immigration, the president ial campaign of 2004, and 2008, and first Lady Michele Obama and her role in the obama white house. I met rachel at an event this year where i bought a book, the book she wrote, american tapestry the story of the black, white, and multiracial ancestors of michelle obama. After hearing her talk, id bought six more copies. I bought them for all my family members and to give out as christmas gifts. Now after having read her book i can tell you it was a good investment.
