Cobourg’s Brookside Youth Detention Centre has closed its doors.
The move (originally mentioned in a Provincial budget review in 2019) was suddenly announced last night.
Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP David Piccini and Cobourg Mayor John Henderson hosted the last-minute Zoom meeting, inviting members of the media to attend.
Piccini explained that the five youth in detention at the facility were relocated, and their families have been notified.
Approximately 100 people were employed at the centre- they were notified of the decision when they showed up for work yesterday.
According to Piccini, the Province hopes to ensure everyone employed by the government will remain employed by the government of Ontario.
