North Carolina takes different path than Alabama on transgender ‘solution in search of problem’

Alabama lawmakers who proposed a bill banning transgender athletes on public school teams said their purpose was to protect girls from a competitive disadvantage.
They cited no specific examples in Alabama of transgender girls competing on girls’ teams. But the bill passed and Gov. Kay Ivey signed it into law.
Other states have passed similar legislation. But in North Carolina, the Legislature took a different course after the lack of prevalent examples became clear.
“We’re not really hearing any complaints about that where it’s an issue,” North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore told the Associated Press on Wednesday. Moore said the House would not vote on the bill that was called the “Save Women’s Sports Act.”

A bill to prohibit Alabama public schools from allowing students to compete on athletic teams that conflict with the gender on their original birth certificate has moved closer to becoming law.
The legislation is similar to bans in other states, including Florida and Mississippi.
The bill by Rep. Scott Stadthagen, R-Hartselle, has had support from Republicans and some opposition from Democrats.
Today, the Senate passed the bill 25-5, with the all five no votes coming from Democrats. The House passed the bill 74-19 a month ago. That vote was also on party lines, with no Republicans voting against the bill.

The Lawrence County Quorum Court approved essential worker pay for county employees who were not part of the countyâs furlough from March through August.
The court authorized the funding at its Dec. 14 meeting and voted to make the payments from the reimbursement funds the county received as part of the CARES Act. Full-time employees will receive $1,000 and part-time employees will receive $500. Justice Ron Ingram was the only dissenting vote.
Justices also approved an ordinance to transfer funds from the CARES Act Fund to reimburse the County General Fund for the portion of end-of-year bonuses paid by county general. The vote was unanimous.
