Rep. Jim McGovern says 'rules apply to us, too' as House approves fines up to $10K on lawmakers who sidestep Capitol security

Rep. Jim McGovern says ‘rules apply to us, too’ as House approves fines up to $10K on lawmakers who sidestep Capitol security Updated Feb 03, 2021; As thousands of National Guardsmen filled the U.S. Capitol after the deadly Jan. 6 attack by loyalists of former president Donald Trump, reporters spotted several lawmakers sidestepping newly installed metal detectors and brushing off police and security in the building. Such a move now could cost a lawmaker up to $10,000 in fines, with the Democratic-led House of Representatives on Tuesday night voting 216-210 in favor of tougher enforcement of a half-century-old law outlawing weapons on Capitol grounds. All but three Democrats, and no Republicans, voted to fine those who sidestep security measures $5,000 for a first offense and $10,000 for subsequent offenses.
