Former Michigan assistant AG facing felony charges

LANSING, Mich. â A former Michigan assistant attorney general who was forced to resign last year is now facing felony charges.
Brian Kolodziej was accused of having a relationship with a victim in a sexual assault case he was assigned to prosecute in Isabella County.
Kolodziej was also accused of having a separate relationship with a special agent from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nesselâs office.
That case, involving sexual assault charges against a Detroit police officer and his stepfather, has since been dismissed.
Kent County Special Prosecutor Chris Becker announced on Thursday two felony charges of misconduct in office, which could land Kolodziej in jail for 10 years.

Thursday afternoon, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker announced two felony charges of misconduct in office against Assistant Attorney General Brian Kolodziej, stemming from a case out of Isabella County.
Kolodziej was the lead prosecutor in the rape case against Ian Elliott in Mt. Pleasant. After the case was settled, allegations against Kolodziej surfaced of an inappropriate relationship with one of the victims during the trial.
He will now face a trial of his own in Isabella County.
There were more allegations against Kolodziej coming from Oakland County but the prosecutor decided not to charge him for those allegations.
A former state assistant attorney general accused of having an inappropriate relationship with the victim in a criminal sexual conduct case is being charged with misconduct in office, the Kent County prosecutor said Thursday.
Brian Kolodziej, who resigned in September 2019, is being charged with two counts in an Isabella County case but will not face charges in a second case from Oakland County, Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker said.
Becker s office was tapped by Attorney General Dana Nessel to investigate Kolodziej, one of her former assistants, after Kolodziej resigned during a case involving child sexual abuse. His resignation led to the dismissal of charges against two men in Oakland County and the firing of an investigator from the AG’s office who had been assigned to work with Kolodziej.
Former prosecutor faces felony misconduct charges related to alleged inappropriate relationship

A former Michigan state prosecutor will be charged with two counts of felony misconduct in office after allegedly engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a victim in a criminal sexual conduct case.
Brian Kolodziej, an assistant attorney general who was hired in September 2018 to prosecute sexual assault cases, was placed on administrative leave and then resigned in fall 2019 after details of the reported relationship surfaced. The attorney general’s office launched an internal investigation into his cases.
Christopher Becker, the Kent County prosecuting attorney who was appointed as the special prosecutor in the investigation, announced the charges against Kolodziej on Thursday but declined to offer additional details regarding his alleged misconduct.
The woman in the reported relationship was a victim of Ian Elliott, a Central Michigan University student, who had been charged in connection to a sexual assault case involving two women in 2016. He’d already been sentenced to a year in prison when news of the relationship broke.
After the revelation, the attorney general’s office offered Elliott a lower charge in the case. He pleaded no contest to fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct, court records show.
Becker, on Thursday, declined to give details on the two charges against Kolodziej, and said information on future court dates in Isabella County would come out at a later time.
