A new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) reveals that people who have had organ transplants remain vulnerable to the deadly COVID-19 infections even after the second dose of the vaccine. Led by the researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, the study concluded that in contrast to immunocompetent participants in vaccine trials, a proportion as low as 17 per cent of solid organ transplant recipients mounted a positive antibody response to the first dose of SARS-CoV-2 messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccines. However, for those receiving anti–metabolite maintenance immunosuppression were less likely to respond. As a part of the study, the researchers assessed antibody re
Patients, who had organ transplants, remain vulnerable to Covid-19 infections even after a second vaccine dose, finds a study that urges people who are immunocompromised to strictly adhere to wearing masks, and maintain physical distancing, even after vaccination. The study, led by researchers at Johns Hopkins University in the US, showed that after two doses of Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine against SARS-CoV-2 the virus that causes Covid 19, just 54 per cent people who have received solid organ transplants produced sufficient antibodies. The findings are published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). Transplant recipients should not assume that two vaccine doses guarantee sufficient immunity against SARS-CoV-2 any more than it did after just one dose, said Dorry Segev, Professor of Surgery and Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

Nations across the world are doing their best to ramp up the inoculation of their populations against COVID-19, with a special focus on high-risk sections. Nearly all these groups are believed to be sufficiently protected by the vaccines. Nevertheless, a new study states that organ transplant recipients who are at an increased risk due to their immunocompromised state are vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2 even after receiving the second dose of vaccination.
According to the study by researchers from Johns Hopkins Medicine, which is a follow-up to an earlier study of theirs, two doses of COVID-19 vaccines provide some amount of protection (54 percent overall) to solid organ transplant patients. However, it is not adequate enough for them to ease up on crucial safety measures such as physical distancing, and wearing of masks, among others.
