Senedd 2021: Wales' second homes make areas 'seasonal resorts'

BBC News By Brendon Williams media captionSecond homes making areas uninhabitable for locals In many parts of Wales, there are few issues more divisive than second homes and their effect on communities. There were 24,873 registered for council tax purposes in January 2021. Many are near the coast and Gwynedd has the highest number with 5,098. Pembrokeshire has 4,068, Cardiff 3,477, Anglesey 2,139 and there are 2,104 in Swansea. Ahead of the Senedd elections, we asked what people would change - and a number were concerned about second homes. In some holiday areas, it is claimed their popularity is pricing local people out of the housing market, and reducing the opportunity for them to rent locally.

Welsh election 2021: The battle to win Lord Elis-Thomas's seat

Welsh election 2021: The battle to win Lord Elis-Thomas s seat By Brendon Williams image captionLord Elis-Thomas has been a member of the assembly since its formation in 1999 While few things are certain in elections, one thing is guaranteed in Dwyfor Meirionnydd - the constituency will have a new Senedd member. Lord Dafydd Elis-Thomas held Plaid Cymru s seat in 2016, but left the party later that year to sit as an independent. An assembly member since 1999, he will not be standing for re-election. The largely rural constituency includes the Llyn Peninsula and part of the Snowdonia National Park. Not surprisingly, farming matters in Dwyfor Meirionnydd.

RNLI sells two Ferraris to buy Pwllheli lifeboat station

BBC News By Brendon Williams image captionTwo rare Ferraris sold for £8.5m at auction A new lifeboat station has been built in north Wales after a businessman left the RNLI cars worth £8.5m in his will. Businessman and classic car enthusiast Richard Colton, died in 2015. He left two rare Ferraris to the charity, which later sold for about £8.5m at auction - the most valuable items ever left to the organisation in a single donation. Part of the money funded new equipment in Hastings, while £2.8m paid for the new station at Pwllheli, Gwynedd. Mr Colton left the RNLI a red 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB, which sold at auction for £6.6m, and a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, which raised £1.93m.
