Like all law-abiding Ontarians, I’m spending a lot of time at home these days. Giving me ample opportunity to gaze out my front window, framed from within by my stereo speakers, at traffic passing through the heart of Wallaceburg. As one would expect under a stay-at-home order, this declined noticeably on the first weekend the order was issued. It never quite settled into a trend, however, and weekend traffic has returned to normal levels. This is worrying because things are not, in fact, normal.
With little else to do between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Sunday, May 9, I estimated roughly six cars per minute were passing my home, excluding emergency vehicles. Add to that a steady stream of pedestrians and such a volume of essential travel, at this hour of the night, is rather surprising.
