How do you run India’s biggest literary prize, the JCB Prize for Literature, in a pandemic year?
Mita Kapur, the director of the prize, talks of her experience in the very first year after taking over.
We turn to books for expanding our imaginative field of wonder, to make sense of the world we live in. The power of words, of stories, of literature, sustains us individually and as a collective, encouraging a discourse, and championing important voices and languages. Books that move us don’t necessarily stay in the neat lines of genres that we sleight them into. In fact, some of the greatest books we’ve read defy categorisation. The only questions we ask of them are: are we compelled to read on? And after we’re done, do we want to re-read them?
