This march, if you can believe it, was organized by two very young people. They told me they were inspired by what they saw in oakland, another march earlier this week which was also organized by two young adults. They were inspired. They called them. They put it on instagram, and this is how this works. A lot of people i mentioned that i had not seen in San Francisco in a long time participating in this march. So far its peaceful. I just wanted to also share an experience that i had. I had to at one point during this demonstration move my car, which was right in the middle of the part where a lot of the demonstrators were gathered. And i politely ask groups of people can you just move so i can move my car . And they did. They were very organized. They said this lady has to move, and they just about 150 people moved so that i could get my car out o
Good morning. Im going to begin this press conference. This is a joint press conference the mayor and i have been doing since the pandemic and these more limited press conferences. Before the legislative meeting, i have a press conference where our report on the issues coming up in the legislative meeting the next day. Tomorrow, tuesday, june 9, the council will have its regular meeting for the month of june. On the agenda is, is not very large in terms of number of measures. So im going to speak to this, take any questions, then i will turn it over to the mayor with her usual press conference, and i will be staying for a while in case there are more questions regarding the councils business. In the last few weeks, we watched the barbaric murder of george floyd by vile, racist Police Officers. We watched Ahmaud Arbery get gunned down by white spr supremacists. Study after study shows that white people and black people are not only more likely to commit crimes, they think that we feel less pain. We have a less nuanced feeling, and less worthy of protection, so we often have to fend for ourselves. Racism is definitely a police problem, one that is as old as our entire nation, but lets be clear no ones off the hook. Racism is an america problem. Trayvon martin, Ahmaud Arbery were killed by citizens. The overwhelming number of hate crimes are committed by ordinary citizens. As we know currently, we dont know and that is the most difficult. And all kids, their peers, are an important part of their development. So it is often asking when can i go to school . At this point, they are very tired of online school. When can i take my friends and when can i see extended family . Right. What kind of indicators are there that a young child is struggling right now . Particularly behaviors that are really across the age spectrum of 5 to adolescence is sleep disturbances and increase in nightmares and in the younger kids, night terrors.
