Grant affords new sealer for Boardman schools | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN A new food-sealing machine will help the food service department of the Boardman School District serve fresh meals to students. Awarded by the national No Kid Hungry charity, the district was provided with $20,000, the district announced. “With this new process, we will produce a meal with a smaller container that still contains the same amount of food as we had been serving, but with less packaging,” Natalie Winkle, food services director, said. “It will make the ready-to-heat meal easier to store in the refrigerator for parents at home, and easier to pack for our staff,” she said. Since the district’s first day of school on Sept. 14, Boardman’s food service department has served more than 187,000 meals to both in-person and remote students. The equipment will seal 30 meals per minute.

School ensures students are fed | News, Sports, Jobs

BOARDMAN School district staff and volunteers have worked together this year to ensure no student goes hungry during the ongoing pandemic. The Food Service Department of Boardman School District on Wednesday had its final food giveaway for 2020. Roughly 200 sets of seven breakfasts and seven lunches were handed out to struggling families. “We have done this every week since school started,” food service director Natalie Winkle said. “We also held it from March through June of this year.” Winkle said the program was put together by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its main objective was to ensure that every child had something to eat, and that the child would eat for free. To meet that goal, Winkle said the USDA reimburses food services that help provide healthy breakfasts and lunches for the children.
