Liberia: National Elections Commission Board Confirms Jeremiah Koung’s Victory in Nimba Senatorial Election

MONROVIA The Board of the National Elections Commission (NEC) has affirmed and confirmed its hearing officer ruling against Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh due to her inability to provide substantial evidence to prove fraud.
On Thursday, the Board of NEC concluded to dismiss Madam Gongloe-Weh’s case with the confirmation that the hearing officer, Cllr. Boakai Harris who conducted the investigative hearing in the matter did not err as assumed by Edith’s legal team.

After days of speculation in media outlets that the National Port Authority (NPA) has paid or planning to pay the sum of US$40,000 to the National Elections Commission (NEC) for a recount in Rivercess County following a mandate from the Supreme Court, the Commission has rejected the report and said it is “Untrue” and that it has no business with NPA or any other entity to fund election processes except the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP).
At a press conference held over the weekend at its headquarters in Monrovia, the NEC, through its chairperson, Davidetta Browne Lansanah, said it is the prerogative of the Ministry of Finance to fund all national elections through direct budgetary support or through partners of government.

The Elections Disputes Hearing Office of the National Elections Commission (NEC) has dismissed Edith Gongloe-Wehâs complaint, citing that pieces of evidence and witnessesâ testimonies amounted to no proof of fraud or irrgularities.
In his ruling that took more than one hour to deliver, Cllr. Boakai Harris said his elections dispute hearing office, after keenly listening to witnesses, including Madam Gongloe-Weh and all others, found no grounds to nullify the December 8, 2020 Special Senatorial results in Nimba, neither call for a rerun or a recount as requested for by the complainant.

22 February the National Elections Commission or NEC will rule in the electoral “frauds and irregularities” case involving Candidate Edith Gongloe-Weh of the Collaborating Political Parties or CPP versus Candidate Jeremiah Kpan Koung of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction or MDR.
According to a notice issued Friday, 19 February in Monrovia, Hearing Officer or Fact-finder Counselor Boakai Harris, hired by the Commission will decided the matter at 12: noon.
Therefore, therefore both the complainant and defense counsels are expected to be in full attendance as final argument in the case was rested or held on Saturday, 13 February.
