why you have been listening to this pastor and close to him for nearly 20 years? reverend wright is somebody who is like an uncle or a family member who you may strongly object to what they have to say. i mean, uncles are blood relatives who you re kind of stuck with at family gatherings, even when they say outrageous things. you know, you can t get rid of them. you can walk out of a church. i mean, you can go up to a pastor and say well, and as i said this is wrong. he went on cable tv and just got pummeled. do you repudiate the man? do you repudiate the comments? and he called me that night and he said, i want to make a speech on race. senator barack obama was working on this speech on race until early this morning. he s hoping, of course, not only to defuse the controversy about those incendiary we were in the green room and senator obama turned to me and said, i know everybody s nervous, but i m going to go out there and give this speech. and maybe pe
take it in and show they can depend on me. dana: wow, lawrence. part of the reason why i wanted to do this. i wanted young people to know they do matter. i see what s happening crossing the country. so often i ve been having conversations and we as broadcasters talk with the parents impacted by the violence on the street and the crime. but no one is really talking to the kids to figure out what exactly is going on. you know, there is all these gangs and all this. i wanted to talk with the young people about that. what is happening. are the gangs showing up after school to recruit you guys? you don t get it. it is every block. every block has their own leadership. by default you have to join if you want to survive in these communities. you can have a cousin on one block and a cousin on the other one and blood relatives and hate each other because of the block you live on. you don t have a choice. a lot of young people were
