A Catholic bishop in southern India has courted controversy after he recommended a Catholic to the Communist Party of India (CPI) as a church-backed candidate for an election in Kerala.
Bishop Jacob Manathodath of Palakkad wrote to CPI state secretary Kanam Rajendran seeking a party ticket for Catholic industrialist Isaac Varghese.
The bishop also pledged Christians support for the party if it nominated Varghese for the Mannarkkad constituency.

Palakkad Bishop Mar Jacob Manathodath has courted a controversy by writing to the Communist Party of India (CPI) demanding that a Christian industrialist be made the Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate in Mannarkkad Assembly constituency.
Bishop Manathodath has demanded the candidature of Isaac Varghese, an industrialist from Kanjikode near here. The Bishop reportedly pointed out that the Church would support Mr. Varghese and that his candidature would increase the winning chances of the LDF in Mannarkkad.

Police in India s Kerala state have filed charges against three Catholic priests and a layperson, three years after they were accused of conspiring and forging documents to defame Cardinal George Alencherry, head of the Syro-Malabar Church.
The accused, members of the Archdiocese of Ernakulum-Angamali, created fake bank documents and forged other documents to prove the cardinal had made substantial financial gains from an alleged land scam in the archdiocese, police records claim.
